I’m an anaesthetic registrar who, one night at a Major Trauma Centre, was handed the bleep and became the most senior anaesthetic doctor in the hospital. There was little to no formal preparation for this role, and the experience highlighted a gap in training that I felt I could improve.
I created The Bleep Test, a one-hour tabletop simulation designed to develop core skills in crisis resource management and prioritisation. The game is suitable for anaesthetic trainees of all grades and is run by a senior trainee or consultant facilitator with 1–4 learners. There’s no scoring and no way to ‘win’; instead, the focus is on structured discussion, reflection, and teamwork - mirroring the real-world challenges faced during on-call shifts.
"Great representation of what happens on call as the most senior anaesthetist out of hours"
"[Made us] think and prioritise about realistic examples of workload in a safe setting. Being able to discuss with consultants who may have differing opinions was useful."
"Really fun and surprisingly realistic"
